Last year, I found myself thinking about something quietly. I asked God a question in my heart: What could I do for You that would actually cost me something?
Not something convenient.
Not something symbolic.
Something that would truly be a sacrifice.
In that moment, I made a quiet promise to God.
No one else heard it.
I didn’t write it down.
I didn’t speak it publicly.
But in my heart, I told Him that I would give something I owned to be used for His kingdom without taking anything from it. At the time, it felt like a sincere but distant thought. Something spiritual in the moment.
And then life moved on, months passed, and honestly, I forgot about the promise.
When Things Became Complicated
For a long time everything connected to that situation seemed steady. Then slowly, things began to shift. Requests started coming in that hadn’t existed before. Conversations became more complicated than they needed to be. I offered solutions, even offered to make things right where I could.
But instead of resolving the situation, it only seemed to create more resistance. The matter began dragging on for months. Communication had to pass through others, and while it wasn’t hostile, it became increasingly frustrating.
At the same time, I had completely forgotten about the promise I had made to God. Now, I found myself thinking about the situation in a very practical way. I started thinking I actually need this to come through for me. At least, that is what I believed at the time.
The Moment God Reminded Me
One day I was listening to a sermon. The pastor was speaking about making covenants with God — And I remember thinking quietly, God, what else do you want from me?
In that same moment, standing in my kitchen, the Holy Spirit interrupted my thoughts and reminded me of the promise I had made.
Immediately, I remembered.
The vow.
The quiet moment.
The promise I had spoken only in my heart.
And in that moment, it became very clear what God was showing me. You thought you needed this. But look how many months have passed without it.
You have lived.
You have been sustained.
Nothing has collapsed.
What we lay before God is no longer ours to control.
In that moment, I realised this was never about circumstances. It was about covenant. God was not testing my situation, He was testing my obedience.
Honouring What Was Spoken in Secret
Right there in my kitchen, I made a decision. I would honour the promise I made to God.
Not partially.
Not reluctantly.
But because a promise made before God matters.
I quietly decided how what had been promised would be used to advance His kingdom.
No audience.
No announcement.
Just obedience.
What Happened Next
What had been delayed for months suddenly resolved. On a Sunday, a non-working day.
The same thing that had stalled for months had now moved forward.
And the timing did not escape me. Not because God can be manipulated. But because God is faithful.
The Lesson
God does not forget what we whisper in surrender.
Even the things we say quietly in our hearts.
Scripture reminds us:“When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.” — Ecclesiastes 5:4
And also: “It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.” — Ecclesiastes 5:5
God hears the promises we make before Him. And when we walk closely with Him, He is faithful enough to remind us. Not to condemn us. But to lead us back into alignment.
Closing Thought
Covenant with God is not casual. What we surrender to Him is not something we later reclaim when it becomes inconvenient.
When we give something to God — whether time, obedience, resources, or sacrifice — it is no longer ours to negotiate with.
It belongs to Him. And when we honour Him in secret, He moves in ways that no one else can orchestrate.
God takes our words seriously. And when we honour Him with integrity, He proves Himself faithful every single time.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for being a God who hears even the quiet promises we make in our hearts.
Thank You for loving us enough to remind us when we drift away from what we have committed to You.
Teach us to honour our words before You.
Give us hearts that value obedience more than convenience.
Help us remember that whatever we surrender to You was never meant to be held onto tightly by us.
Grow in us the kind of faith that trusts You fully — even when we do not yet understand what You are doing.
May our lives reflect integrity before You, both in public and in the quiet places where only You can see.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
